Education and Networking

"EUPC 2012"

Considering the importance of relating to the community in the exterior of the permaculture projects, it came the idea to develop a project about networking and education. Looking for people to get involved and educated was the main goal of this project.

Most of the work ive been developing since the beginning of my permaculture river of life is related to education and networking.

Geoff Lawton once told me that “You start being a permaculture teacher in the moment you have to explain what it is”

"Permaculture Teachers"

Following this directive ive been putting a big part of my energy into learning, so that I could teach my discoveries and ahe same time sharing my developments with the other permaculturists.

Construction by permaculture student

By developing websites on the internet to communicate and by organizing events like courses, fairs, meetings, pizza nights, international events ive been able to apply the permaculture ethic of fair share and that have brought me many resources.

Observation

Intuitive Observation
-Stronger network can be created in Portugal
-Some projects are isolated
-Need for more education
-Not much research in mediterranean context
-Slow development of permaculture
-Not many platforms for portuguese speakers

Deductive Observation
-Potential for a boost in permaculture in Portugal
-Possibility for a higher level on education
-Possible improvements on internet interchange
-Some logistics will be necessary
-Conditions to create a stronger community
-Creation of higher number of permaculturists

Limiting factors

What is limiting your yield?
-The factor that limits mostly the yield is the time to develop and maintain the structures.

Were can i open more niches?
-A better promotion may create a bigger interest.

What improvements can be done?
-A good organization of time and tasks

How to extend limits and comfort zones?
-Share the results with international community

Energy leaks

Where are you bleeding?
-Still a small number of projects

Design

Development of the Portuguese Permaculture network

The design ive created for this project operates in the following levels

Internet
Creation of a online website to promote my achievements

Creation of my personal you tube channel to teach with videos

Creation of a national permaculture social network

"Closing human cycles"

Demonstration sites
One of the best ways to promote permaculture is by teaching courses, by doing this we extend the number of students and permaculturists and at the same time we support developing projects and farms.

Master plan

Moment 1
-Developement of my website and you tube channel to share my work

Moment 2
-Start filming and making records of achievements
-First courses

Moment 3
-Creation of national social network

Moment 4
-Projects tour to promote the portuguese diploma system and the idea of creating network

Moment 5
-Organization of national teachers meeting

Zoning

The celebration, education and networking project is part of the development of zone 000.

Filtering Tools
Permaculture Ethics

Care for earth

This project in not directly related to landscape regeneration, but it can create a huge impact since it works directly with education for permaculturists.

Care for people

Social landscapes
In this project the influence on social landscapes is related with the sharing of developments made by the permaculture community their discoveries and inspire others to follow the same path .

Fair share
The creation of strong permaculture networks is the ultimate manifestation of the ethics of fair share.

Permaculture Principles
The most frequent principles applied were:

The problem is the solution
Integrate rather than segregate
Start small
Use local resources

Financial analysis
Not a very high financial investment, the biggest part of the investment is on time.

Quality of life
-The quality of life we have tried to achieve, despite the limiting boundaries, was to have a good flow of relations between permaculturists.

2012
Creation of a online national permaculture social network

This social network was created because of the need of having a social network online only dedicated to permaculture that would operate as a platform for permaculture promotion in Portugal.

Space
-The project was design to use as less as possible any fisical space.
Most of the connections will be developed in a first stage on the internet

We hope to create an amazing social network and to extend it as much as possible in Portugal and to the world.

What would i do different?

I could have done this diploma in a more professional way, less emotional and more thecnical.

I am not the best analitic person and right at the beggining of this diploma construction i was getting lost with the constant grammar chalenges with the british language, so i decided to make it as simple as possible, using  no connection words, just main concepts.

Since i am a big fan of  non formal education i decided to create this process sharing what i really am and the inspiration that i have also received from my teachers and fellow permaculturists.

Final Diploma observations

By developing this 10 projects and going thru all of what I have done this last years to support this network, and presenting it to the other permaculturists in Portugal and in the world I found that permaculture is not just the growing of trees or the regeneration of soil or the water harvesting...ultimatly permaculture is us …

...its me, you, the black, the whyte, the red, the ugly, that stone, that rock, that lake, its the inspiration we get from everything that is around us...its the connection with gaia the abundant.

For me its the resurrection of an old way of looking into reality and relating to it, dancing with the patterns and with the succession, for the creation on earth of our most common archetype...the garden of eden.

If I would have a god it would be called nature... and the spirit that makes it more alive would be called...Permaculture.

This is were I found my spirit, the fire that burns and makes tomorrow be alive.
